This 5,000-ha protected area was established in 1975, and is administered by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. It covers an area of typical inland KwaZulu-Natal acacia savanna with occasional thickets.

The reserve offers extensive game-viewing facilities, guided walks, environmental education, and three picnic sites which makes it ideal for a day visit.

Accommodation consists of self-catering cottages and campsites, with and without electrical plug points.

There are 30 kms of tourist roads available to view a wide variety of game including rhino, giraffe, eland, kudu, zebra, ostrich, hyena, jackal, reedbuck and duiker.

Over 250 species of birds have been recorded at the reserve.

There are 3 picnic sites with toilets, running cold water and braai facilities.
